Whales were hunted for their oil which was used in street lamps, their spermaceli which was used for candle wax and their bone which was used to stiffen corsets. By the mid to late 19th century the industry threadtened many whale species with extinction. By 1978 whale products were no longer needed and Australia banned whaling and the import of whale products.
